Event Description:
Barry Adkins left Gilbert, Arizona on foot on February 24th, setting out on a 1,450 mile journey to Kalispell, MT to lay the ashes of his 18-year-old son to rest. On Monday, June 4th, Barry will arrive in Missoula. Here he will retell his son’s story about underage drinking and alcohol poisoning to every parent and teen he can. “I would never have thought that one night of fun could end this way,” said Barry. The event is hosted locally by the Missoula Underage Substance Abuse Prevention team, a coalition of the Missoula Forum for Children and Youth. It is a program of NotMYKid, a substance abuse prevention agency in Arizona. During his presentation, Barry tells how Kevin moved into his first apartment following his eighteenth birthday. His friends helped him celebrate his newfound independence with a housewarming party. Beer gave way to Jack Daniels and after six double-shots, Kevin passed out. As a practical joke, his friends shaved his head and legs, then carefully propped him up on his side in case he vomited. At 4 am, someone realized that Kevin wasn’t breathing and called 911, but it was too late. Kevin’s first day of independence was also his last. Barry wants something good to come of this tragedy. Over the course of almost five months, he has literally carried Kevin’s ashes and shared his message through Arizona, Utah, Idaho and Montana. Barry’s presentation will be featured June 4th at a community dinner at the Western Montana Fairgrounds in the Home Arts building. The event is free and open to the public. Attractions include high school bands Skymoose and Basic Practicalities, activities for teens including sumo wrestling and bouncy boxing, and Indian tacos prepared by volunteers from the Missoula Indian Center. Food will be served at 5:30pm. “Kevin’s Last Walk” is a tribute to a much-loved son and a quest to save lives. For more information about Barry’s journey, visit www.kevinslastwalk.org. For information about local events where Barry will tell his story, please contact Jori Frakie at (406) 258-3798.
